Detailed Information
AP English Literature and Composition is a literature exam focused on literary analysis, poetry interpretation, prose examination and literary argument essay writing. The exam consists of 55 MCQs and 3 FRQs (poetry analysis, prose fiction analysis, literary argument). Students must use literary terms (irony, symbolism, allegory, metaphor, tone, point of view) correctly in their analysis.
In AP English Literature, the literary argument essay requires analyzing a given theme using a literary work of the student's own choosing. Having a broad reading repertoire therefore provides a critical advantage. TestPrep English Literature tutors teach close reading techniques, literary analysis terminology and essay structuring strategies. At least one poem and one prose passage are analyzed each week to systematically develop writing skills.
Core topics include Poetry analysis, Short fiction and Novel and longer fiction; AP is a single-level course, so every student sits the same exam.
We combine concise topic notes, conceptual questions and past-paper practice, with a weekly error-log review.
It depends on the target grade and starting level; typically 1-2 hours of tutoring per week plus 3-5 hours of independent work.
The College Board publishes one Course and Exam Description per subject and the format holds across sessions. When a course is redesigned, we rebuild the plan around the new CED.
55 multiple-choice questions in 5 sets of 8-13, on prose fiction, drama and poetry excerpts
3 essays — poetry analysis, prose fiction analysis and literary argument
The exam runs 3 hours in total; College Board publishes the section weightings for this subject but not a per-section time limit. AP exams are scored 1-5, and most universities award credit for a 4 or 5.
