Detailed Information

About AP Physics 1

01

About the AP Physics 1 Exam

AP Physics 1 is an algebra-based physics exam covering kinematics, Newton's laws, work and energy, momentum, rotational motion, simple harmonic motion, waves and basic electricity (circuits). The exam consists of 50 MCQs and 5 FRQs (including experimental design, qualitative/quantitative analysis and paragraph-length response questions).

02

TestPrep Strategy for Scoring 5 on AP Physics 1

AP Physics 1 is noted by the College Board as one of the lowest-scoring AP exams because it requires deep conceptual understanding rather than formula memorization. TestPrep Physics 1 tutors focus on areas where students struggle most, including rotational motion (torque, angular momentum), energy conservation problems and circuit analysis. Lab-based FRQs and paragraph-length response writing strategies are practiced in detail.

Quick Answers

What level is AP Physics 1?

Algebra-based, no calculus required. Typically taken in grade 11. AP Physics C is calculus-based and more like university physics.

What is the exam format?

MCQ: 50 questions, 90 min (50%). FRQ: 5 questions, 90 min (50%). FRQs cover experimental design, quantitative analysis and qualitative reasoning.

How hard is a 5?

AP Physics 1 historically has one of the lowest 5 rates (~8-10%). Conceptual traps and FRQ structure make it tough.

Which topics are covered?

Kinematics, Newton's laws, circular motion, energy, momentum, simple harmonic motion, mechanical waves, simple circuits.
