A-Level Art and Design is a creative exam consisting of artistic skill development, critical and contextual study, portfolio creation and final piece (externally set assignment) components. In the CIE syllabus, Component 1 (portfolio) and Component 2 (externally set assignment) are assessed; Edexcel follows a similar structure. Different mediums including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, digital art and three-dimensional work may be used.
In A-Level Art and Design, the portfolio must show a consistent artistic journey and the final piece must be based on strong conceptual foundations for A*. TestPrep Art and Design tutors provide one-on-one guidance on artistic research methodology, experimentation process and reflective annotation writing. Theme development, medium diversity and artistic intention statement writing skills are systematically practiced in portfolio structuring. Curatorial approach and presentation techniques are taught during final exhibition preparation.
Core topics include Personal investigation, Sketchbook and process and Comparative artist study; HL/extended levels add further depth.
We combine concise topic notes, conceptual questions and past-paper practice, with a weekly error-log review.
It depends on the target grade and starting level; typically 1-2 hours of tutoring per week plus 3-5 hours of independent work.
Paper structure, timing and weighting can vary by exam board/session; the lesson plan is finalised once the student's syllabus and target board are confirmed.
MCQ and/or structured/long-response questions
Practical, oral or research component where applicable to the syllabus
