About A-Level Mathematics

01

About the A-Level Mathematics Exam

A-Level Mathematics is a core exam covering pure mathematics, statistics and mechanics administered by Cambridge CIE or Edexcel exam boards. Algebra, calculus, trigonometry, vectors, probability distributions and Newton's laws form the core topics. CIE divides Pure Mathematics into Paper 1 and Paper 3, Statistics into Paper 6 and Mechanics into Paper 4.

02

The Path to A* in A-Level Mathematics

Achieving A* in A-Level Mathematics requires strong algebraic manipulation, proof skills and the ability to apply calculus to practical problems. TestPrep Mathematics tutors identify each student's weak points and create a personalized study plan. Regular past paper practice, topic quizzes and full practice tests build exam confidence. CIE and Edexcel format differences are closely monitored and preparation is tailored accordingly.

Quick Answers

What does CIE A-Level Math cover?

Pure Mathematics 1 and 3 (compulsory) + either Mechanics 1 or Statistics 1 + Probability and Statistics 2 or Mechanics 2. Four papers total.

How does Edexcel differ?

Edexcel: Pure 1+2 + Statistics & Mechanics 1+2 (4 papers). CIE is more modular; Edexcel mixes topics across papers. Universities accept both equally.

How many marks for an A*?

CIE: ~80% raw. Edexcel: ~85%. UMS scaling applies; thresholds drop on harder sittings.

Is Further Math required?

Selective math/physics programs (Cambridge, Imperial) often ask for Further Math A*. For engineering, A*A* in Math + Physics is usually sufficient.
