About IGCSE English

Detailed Information

About the IGCSE English Exam

IGCSE English Language is a Cambridge language exam assessing reading comprehension, writing skills, summary extraction and directed writing components. Paper 1 covers Reading and Writing, while Paper 2 covers directed writing and composition. Students must recognize and produce different text types (article, letter, report, speech).

TestPrep's Approach to A* in IGCSE English

In IGCSE English Language, the reading section assesses explicit and implicit meaning extraction, identifying the writer's purpose and tone. The writing section requires appropriate tone, register and text structure for the target audience. TestPrep English Language tutors develop summary writing techniques (paraphrasing in your own words), descriptive and argumentative essay formats and Paper 2 composition types through regular writing practice.

After enough examples of the same question type, the repeated mistakes decreased. I finally understood what was going wrong in IGCSE English. I went into the exam much calmer than I would have before. Thanks to TestPrep for helping me stay on track.

When I started preparing for IGCSE / GCSE, I wasn't sure what order to study things in. During the intensive review, we returned to real gaps instead of restarting everything. I learned not to spend the same amount of time on every line of a long text. My tutor usually asked me to explain my thinking before stepping in. Focusing on past papers and mock review worked well near the exam. A big thank you to my tutor for all the support :)

  • Riley Ritchie

I stopped choosing answers by feel and started looking for evidence in the passage. The preparation felt calmer than I expected.

  • Janna Koch

As the exam got closer, I wasn't sure what I should actually review. Choosing questions by topic made my practice time much more useful. Discussing why the other choices were wrong helped more than I expected. The plan changed with my mock and homework results, so the work never felt random. I used the question bank regularly to return to weaker topics. Thank you to the tutor who stayed supportive until the end.

I was doing questions for IGCSE English on my own but never had a steady routine. My tutor usually asked me to explain my thinking before stepping in. Lesson times could fit around school, university or work. A lot of my mistakes came from rushing through the wording of the question. I wasn't trying to learn new topics at the very last minute. Thanks to TestPrep for helping me stay on track.

Our son's school schedule was already very busy. Online lessons made it possible to continue without losing time on travel. We were able to follow the mock results regularly. Regular mocks built familiarity with the real exam pace. The lessons started being followed without constant reminders from us. We quickly felt that the tutor was a good match.

The IGCSE / GCSE format felt unnecessarily confusing at first. I left the exam feeling that I had done what I could.

After my first attempt, I wanted the second round of preparation to feel more organized. My tutor could see my reasoning and usually found the source of an error quickly. A lot of my mistakes came from rushing through the wording of the question. My tutor usually asked me to explain my thinking before stepping in. We didn't spend extra time on things I already knew. I'm genuinely thankful to my tutor for being patient.

We weren't sure whether online lessons would be effective. Online lessons made it possible to continue without losing time on travel. Individual lesson time was used around our child's actual needs. We thank the tutor and the TestPrep team.
