IB Extended Essay Assessment Structure

  • Extended essay

    — · Set by the IB subject guide

An independent 4,000-word research essay in a chosen subject, supervised in-school and assessed externally

  • Reflections (RPPF)

    — · Set by the IB subject guide

Three recorded reflection sessions with the supervisor, assessed as part of the engagement criterion

  • Contribution to the diploma

    — · A-E

Graded A-E; together with theory of knowledge it contributes up to 3 points to the diploma total

IB subjects are graded 1-7. The IB is the only awarding body for the Diploma Programme, so this structure is the same in every school; HL and SL sit different papers and the per-component weightings are set by the current subject guide.
