About IB Physics

Detailed Information

About IB Physics

IB Physics is one of the most challenging Group 4 courses in the IB Diploma Programme. The current syllabus (first exams 2025) has five themes shared by SL and HL: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. HL students additionally study HL-only topics such as rigid body mechanics, relativity, thermodynamics, induction and quantum physics. Experimental work and data analysis skills form the practical backbone of the course.

The TestPrep Difference in IB Physics

In IB Physics exams, Paper 1 combines multiple-choice questions (1A) with data-based questions (1B), and Paper 2 has short-answer and extended-response questions; there is no longer a Paper 3. TestPrep Physics tutors help students not just memorize formulas but develop deep conceptual understanding and the ability to apply formulas to novel situations. For IA, detailed guidance is provided from experiment design to uncertainty analysis and scientific report writing.

Quick Answers

  • How does IB Physics HL differ from SL?

HL covers all five SL themes and adds HL-only topics on top; the assessment weightings are the same. HL is 240 teaching hours, SL 150.

  • What is the IA structure?

Individual experiment, 6-12 pages, 20% of the final mark. Research question, experimental design, data analysis and evaluation criteria.

  • Which universities ask for IB Physics HL?

Oxford/Cambridge/ETH/Imperial engineering: Physics HL 6/7. Some medicine programs accept Physics HL but Chemistry/Biology take priority.

  • What's in the Data Booklet?

Constants, formulas and data tables. Provided in the exam; no need to memorize but knowing where each formula sits saves time.

FAQ

Which option topic should I choose?

The current IB Physics programme (first exams 2025) has no option topics; the old Options A–D and Paper 3 were removed. SL and HL study the same five themes (A–E), and HL adds further topics to them. Assessment is Paper 1 (1A multiple choice + 1B data-based) 36%, Paper 2 44% and the IA 20%.

Is Physics HL workable with Math AA SL?

Yes, but Math AA HL makes Year 2 calculus-heavy physics far easier.

What's the safest IA topic?

Simple pendulum, inclined plane, RC circuit, Hooke's law — classic experiments with controllable variables.

How much tutoring is needed?

About 1.5-2 hrs/week through Year 2 (50-70 hours total). Add 5-8 hours for IA guidance.

I was doing questions for IB Physics on my own but never had a steady routine. The plan changed with my mock and homework results, so the work never felt random. Knowing the topic wasn't always enough; I had to learn which information the question actually needed. Thank you to my tutor and the TestPrep team.

I chose IB Physics this year and wanted to build a solid base from the beginning. Full-length mocks helped me get used to the real exam pace. I became much more careful with graphs, experiments and data-based questions. When I got something wrong, we looked at why I chose that answer instead of only checking the solution. Experiencing the exam format beforehand made test day much less stressful. Thanks to TestPrep for helping me stay on track.

We wanted our child to keep up with the school pace in IB Physics. The class size kept our child from disappearing into the background. We were able to follow the mock results regularly. Online lessons made it possible to continue without losing time on travel. We thank the tutor and the TestPrep team.

Everyone recommended different resources and I kept switching between them. The class felt relaxed enough to ask questions without overthinking it. Past-paper questions showed me how different topics could appear together. I stopped doing a huge amount one week and nothing the next. Questions from other students often helped me as well. I was really happy with the lessons.

Over time, IB Physics became one of the most organized parts of my IB Diploma preparation. Once I understood the reasons behind the facts, the questions felt less random. After a while, the questions started to feel much more familiar.
