About IB Computer Science

Detailed Information

About IB Computer Science

IB Computer Science is a Group 4 course combining the theoretical foundations of computer science with practical programming skills. System fundamentals, computer organization, networks, data structures, algorithms, resource management and abstract thinking are among the core topics. HL students additionally study advanced data structures, recursive algorithms, object-oriented programming and advanced topics.

The TestPrep Difference in IB Computer Science

In IB Computer Science exams, Paper 1 covers theoretical knowledge and algorithm analysis while Paper 2 focuses on an elective topic (databases, modeling/simulation, web science or object-oriented programming). For IA, students develop a software solution for a real client. TestPrep Computer Science tutors provide step-by-step guidance in coding practice in Java and Python, algorithm design and the IA solution development process. Pseudocode writing and trace table exercises are practiced regularly.

Quick Answers

  • What topics does IB Computer Science cover?

Core topics include System fundamentals, Computer organization and Networks; HL covers the SL core plus extra depth and an additional paper.

  • How should I study for IB Computer Science?

We combine concise topic notes, conceptual questions and past-paper practice, with a weekly error-log review.

  • How many tuition hours are typically needed for IB Computer Science?

It depends on the target grade and starting level; typically 1-2 hours of tutoring per week plus 3-5 hours of independent work.

  • Does the IB exam format change from session to session?

No. The IB publishes one subject guide for every school worldwide, so paper structure and weightings are fixed; only the grade boundaries move each session. HL and SL sit different papers.

IB Computer Science Assessment Structure

  • Paper 1

Set by the IB subject guide · HL and SL differ

Multiple-choice and data-based questions; the data booklet is provided

  • Paper 2

Set by the IB subject guide · HL and SL differ

Short and extended response across the syllabus; HL sits a longer paper with additional-higher-level material

  • Internal assessment — scientific investigation

    — · Set by the IB subject guide

An individual investigation, marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB

IB subjects are graded 1-7. The IB is the only awarding body for the Diploma Programme, so this structure is the same in every school; HL and SL sit different papers and the per-component weightings are set by the current subject guide.

Everyone recommended different resources and I kept switching between them. I'm glad I worked with my tutor through this process.

  • Joonho Seo

We wanted our child to keep up with the school pace in IB Computer Science. Mistakes became something to work on rather than something to feel bad about. The overall experience was positive from beginning to end.

  • Georgia Haines

I was doing questions for IB Computer Science on my own but never had a steady routine. I stopped doing a huge amount one week and nothing the next. School assignments and internal exam dates were included in the schedule. My written code answers became much more organized. Knowing what to study reduced a lot of the stress. Thank you to my tutor and the TestPrep team.

We noticed that the resources kept changing during independent study. The tutor's close attention to weaker areas gave us confidence. Seeing the change in our child made us very happy.

  • Shota Shimizu

The IB Diploma format felt unnecessarily confusing at first. When I got something wrong, we looked at why I chose that answer instead of only checking the solution. Before coding, I began thinking about which structure actually fit the problem. The preparation felt calmer than I expected.

  • Margaux Tessier

I wasn't starting from zero, but the same mistakes kept showing up in my mocks. My tutor usually asked me to explain my thinking before stepping in. After each test, we looked beyond the score and reviewed the type of each mistake. The lessons where I found the bug myself were the ones I remembered best. After a while, the questions started to feel much more familiar. Thanks to TestPrep for helping me stay on track.

After my first attempt, I wanted the second round of preparation to feel more organized. Having the lesson move at my pace made the process feel much easier. My written code answers became much more organized. The plan changed with my mock and homework results, so the work never felt random. Lesson times could fit around school, university or work. Thank you to the tutor who stayed supportive until the end.

  • Diya Nair

    4/5

Over time, IB Computer Science became one of the most organized parts of my IB Diploma preparation. I started noticing the reason for a mistake much faster.

  • Caleb Brennan

As the exam got closer, I wasn't sure what I should actually review. Thanks to TestPrep for helping me stay on track.

  • Isha Gowda

We didn't spend extra time on things I already knew. The feedback I received on IB Computer Science was clear and practical. There was no overnight miracle, but the progress was easy to see. The preparation felt calmer than I expected.

  • Bryce Raines

I was taking IB Computer Science at school, but getting used to the exam questions took time. The class felt relaxed enough to ask questions without overthinking it. I left the exam feeling that I had done what I could. I'm glad I worked with my tutor through this process.
